Contrast & Negative Space
The aim of this project was to understand the principles of contrast and negative space. This was to be achieved by producing two magazine spreads, a splash page and turn page, with the theme of Mars and space. It was important to apply what I had learned from the previous task of alignment and hierarchy, to show my understanding of this process. Three of the images provided had to be used within the spreads and 800 words of the copy. Imagination and consideration had to be taken with this project, however for the better as for me negative space is a rarity within my designs.
Research into Negative Space & Contrast
I have linked a number of articles online which I found useful when understanding more about negative space in the world of art and Graphic Design.
Framer and Site Point tabs below are the ones I found most useful when describing the uses of this technique in Design.

Magazine Layouts
I spent some time looking at magazine layouts at home, they are not exactly negative space however, it's still useful to look at.
Thumbnail Sketches
After researching negative space and magazine layouts I started to sketch some ideas down. This was my first attempt at a magazine spread and looking back at these images I knew I was not confident in where to start or how to create negative space or contrast visually. This is something that now I am hoping to work on in my future designs. Thankfully my thumbnail sketches are now visually clearer and more detailed than these turned out.
Development Work
Before I started mocking up my magazine spreads digitally I edited some of the images in Photoshop, then took my designs and images into Indesign.
Development
I liked the idea of this composition and the way the images were in letterbox view. I tried to develop this idea and layout further, however realising there isn't much negative space going on in the splash page or turn page I tried to see if I could create the right layout to meet the negative space elements.
