Communicating with Audiences

Book Cover Design

Diary of a Young Naturalist

I really enjoyed the topic of this book, as for me nature is encapsulated in my life, it’s my ‘theme’ as you would say, relating to the outside world submerged in nature and it’s natural surroundings. This was the book that became very personal in designing. I used collage techniques from books and diaries of my Dads which were all about wild flowers, birds, and his everyday life which mainly consisted of what wildlife he saw. I believed it was only right to have something quite personal for this cover as this is what the book is about. It’s raw and personal and divulging the reader into a secret world.

Research

To begin my research I gathered leaves and tried to figure out different ways of laying these out on a table, making them sometimes neat and organised and then trying them a bit more free and scattered. I then scanned my Dad's diaries and nature books, trying to create random collage peices in photoshop.

Thumbnails

Once I had collated imagery and started to get some ideas I started to thumbnail sketch. Again I didn't start too great, I was thinking too much into every detail and creating far too complicated images. Eventually I started to see things a little clearer and less busy.
